MARINE STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL CERTIFICATION

We are proud at The Fish Shoppe to say that we are the first independent retailer to obtain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody Certification!

What does this mean?
Between the ocean and your plate, fish and seafood products may pass through many stages. ... The MSC Chain of Custody Standard ensures that products from MSC certified sustainable fisheries are traceable and separated from non-certified products. Look out for the Blue Tick in store, our MSC-certified range is continually expanding!

SUSTAINABILITY AND SEAFOOD GUIDES

The Fish Shoppe only provides our customers with sustainable seafood. We understand our customers do their own research on sustainability, and often use seafood guides to help them make sustainable choices. However, when purchasing seafood with us, we take out that hard work – and cross reference all our fish with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC), the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) and the Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES)  who manage and monitor the fisheries to ensure fish for the future.

You can now get the information that we use direct to your phone! Have a look at http://fish.gov.au/App for the Status of Australian Fish Stocks (SAFS). This comprehensive, yet easy to use app covers most fish caught in Australian waters.

We know that the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) has updated its sustainable seafood guide for Australian seafood. The AMCS assessment is at odds with not only AFMA’s science based assessment of Commonwealth managed fisheries but also those of the ABARES, the Marine Stewardship Council and the Status of Australian Fish Stocks (administered by the Fisheries Research & Development Corporation).

It is also disappointing that AMCS appears not to have considered the broader implications of its rankings on Australian consumers by leaving them with limited opportunity to purchase Australian seafood in the ‘better’ category. Seafood is a healthy food choice and has a relatively low carbon footprint (compared other animal protein sources) and most importantly SUSTAINABLE!

At The Fish Shoppe, we encourage you to ask about our seafood, is it sustainable? Where was it sourced from? We have the knowledge and the understanding of fisheries management and seafood production to answer any of your questions.

Don’t rely on the guides alone to make your choice, speak with Josh, Renee or Ciara at the counter!
